Edit - I fired up the car to wash it and the tire pressure warning immediately came on. It’s toast and will be changed, likely along with the rim... M y wife curbed the Mini yesterday. Took a gouge out of the tire. It is on that lip just outside the radius of where the rim picks up the tire. No belt is showing and it is holding air. Thoughts?

A lot of tires do not have belts in the sidewall. I would consider this worthy of an emergency tire change.

Sudden tire failures are unpredictable.

The rim looks fine to run but that tire is no longer looks safe. That cut goes almost to the bead and if that came from curbing it means some serious trauma to the tire and may have damaged the belts too.

Sorry but that tire needs to be replaced from what I can see.

Worry or not?

Worry.

That tire ought to be replaced, the wheel looks to just be cosmetic.

check craigslist for a single tire that matches. you’d be surprised how many good single tires are out there depending on your area. bet you can find a cheap match and not break the bank.

Yaow, that’s a big chunk, I’d replace the tire.

If it was a little shallower, you might have been okay. It’s a bit deeper than I’d be comfortable with. Call around, tire shops or even the dealer might have gently used / preowned (like a returned) version of that tire.

that’s an awful deep gash in the sidewall...

Tire and wheel are both toast.

Curbed hard enough to do that much damage, high likelihood the wheel is cracked. Only takes one pothole for a surprise wheel failure then, which costs a LOT more than replacing the wheel.

I might be comfortable with the wheel, but definitely not the tire.

Depends on the amount of her life insurance, but since you posted this I don’t think they would pay.

Change tire, not you wife...

State law where I live says if you can see chords in a sidewall gouge the tire is no good.

So go off that.

Or whatever makes you comfortable.

From the picture it looks deep, but without actually visually inspecting the tire up close who knows.
